HOLLY BARTON

The first mention of Holly in the Hall Co., GA area comes from the following:

FIRST WHITE SETTLERS IN DEKALB, GWINNETT, HALL, WHITE, HABERSHAM, AND RABUN COUNTIES

Excerpt of a letter from the Governor William Rabun Papers, Telamon Cuyler Collection, Special Collections, University of Georgia Libraries, identifying white persons who moved into the Cherokee lands that were soon afterward part of the 1820 and 1821 land lotteries.

"...At and above the shallowford are Wikkiam [William?] Stoker, William Baity, a man by the name of Hawkins, & John Wagoner, James Abercrombia senr, James Abercrombia Junr, Benjn. Morris, Henry Morris, John Diffy, Henry Bartin, Holly Bartin widow & George Davis.

---------------------------------------------

So Holly was a widow in 1817 living near Henry Bartin (Barton).  There are numerous lists of Henry's siblings.  I haven't seen any documentation to prove they are Henry's siblings and would welcome documention if any one has it.  Since it is widely thought among descendants that Henry's siblings are James, David, Stephen, Mary Ellen, Matilda and Olive, they should fit the 1820 census pattern.

Frank has information theorizing that John Barton b. 1770 in Va. and Holly b. 1770 in SC may the parents of Henry. He would welcome refuting or supporting evidence/comments.

I descend from Mary Holly (Barton) Hicks.  She  was first listed in the 1840 census married to Henry W. Hicks. They were a young married couple in their early 20s without any children. I believe, but have not been able to verify, that Mary Holly Barton is the daughter of John Barton and Patsy Hardin Barton of Jackson County, Georgia. Henry W. Hicks was killed in an accident in 1860 and the Administrator of his estate was Eli Hardin, who is probably the brother or uncle of Patsy Hardin Barton. I believe this John Barton is the John Barton that came into Georgia with Isaac Barton and Bayless Nations. I have been in contact with a descendant of Isaac Barton, whose grandfather's name was John Hardin Barton. Also my Henry Hicks and Mary Holly Hicks were living in Floyd County, Georgia and remained there until their deaths. Living in Floyd County are other members of the Hardin family that Paty Hardin Barton belongs to. I also believe that Holly Barton who was living among the Indians just outside of Hall County in 1817 and later moved into Hall County in 1820 is probably the grandmother of my Mary Holly Barton. She is probably the mother of John Barton.
