Thanks Debby for responding to my queries. Yes, you are welcome to include anything I might have written, but it is mostly undocumented. That's what I am interested in right now, where to find the sources for information that people have put on the web.

I am also seeking the parents of my G-g-grandmother, Phalba L. Barton. She was married to Joab Lewis and they lived for many years in Gordon Co. GA. I found that they are buried in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Gordon Co. According to listing in the cemetery book:

Lewis, Phalba L. Barton w/o Joab 25 July 1829 1 Apr 1900

Lewis, Joab 13 Feb. 1825  25 mar. 1900

In the same listing next to Phalba is Jane Barton 9 Dec. 1795 29  Feb. 1884

According to newspaper excerpt, "She died at the home of her son-in-law Joab Lewis." One of mother's cousins said she was the wife of Bailey Anderson BARTON and her maiden name was FIELD, no documentation. When and where were Jane and Bailey married, if this is true?

I am interested in becoming a member of DAR and will, of course, need proof of these links, which is what I am trying to find. Any clues will be most deeply appreciated. Thanks, Jane in Houston

My earliest finding of my Bartons is a Joshua F. Barton B. about 1820 in SC. He was married to a Catherine ? b. about 1822; SC.  According the 1860 Gordon Co. census, their children were:

  1. William S.
  2. James B.
  3. Mary A.
  4. Isaac N.
  5. David C.
  6. Oliver W.

Most are buried in Gordon Co., as well. I am descended through David C. b. 11 Dec 1855, md. 30 Mar 1884 to Mary Frances Dillard. He died 4 Dec 1921. David and Mary Frances had the following children:

  1. Mary L.
  2. Samuel E.
  3. Emma L.
  4. John F.
  5. Mandy C.
  6. Maggie R.
  7. Annie L.   [I am descended thru Annie.  Does anyone know about this line of Bartons?]

[See Joseph Barton for more on this family.]

The name of your first known ancestor: John Barton

Since I posted on this site about 2 months ago seeking info. on my greatgrandfather, James Garvin Barton (b.July 8,1847 in SC) I was able to find the names of his parents on his Confederate pension application. His parents were Shapley Barton and Elizabet Montgomery of Greenville Co.SC. Having these names has led me to the extensive research done on the Greenville,SC Bartons by a number of people and also in the Barton book. Some researchers have nothing on James Garvin Barton beyond his name and an approximate birth year. And some others (I believe they may have obtained their info. from the Barton Book) along with the Barton Book have James Garvin Barton, son of Shapley Barton and Elizabeth Montgomery married to a woman named Fannie with children Horace Stafford, and Lyda. This is incorrect. James Garvin Barton, son of Shapley Barton and Elizabeth Montgomery of Greenville SC married Angeline Hawkins Blackston (a widow) on April 25, 1882 in Forsyth Co.GA. They had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Barton, born o June 25, 1889 in Gordon Co.GA. Mary Elizabeth Barton (Smith) was my maternal grandmother. I would like to hear from any Barton researchers who would care to comment on this. Please e-mail me at themajors@mindspring.com.
