3-18-1847:  Aminda Barton md. Terry Byrd  [Forsyth County Marriages 1834-1850 Forsyth County, GA]

Date: Thu, 14 May 1998    From: Lee

Rumors handed down thru several lines of Fowlers has it that we were originally Bartons and were adopted by a Fowler family.   James Fowler b. 1797 in SC migrated to GA in early 1820's. Also brother William and possible brother Thomas (no proof). Several Fowler descendants have the given name Barton, which leads credence to the rumor. During my research I have met very distant cousins who were told the same thing. I cannot link James Fowler to any of the Fowler lines in SC. He stopped for a while in Hall County, GA (as did a number of Barton families) before settling in Forsyth/Cherokee counties GA.  [Another member of this clan is  Ken  For more information on this family, see Cherokee Co., GA.]

[Lee (above) mentioned on his web page that James, Sarah and daughter Jane were living in Habersham during the 1830 census.
Lette (b. 1818; SC)
Elizabeth (1822; GA) [Why such a gap between Eliz. & Jane?  Death of children in between? Perhaps md. twice?]
Jane (b. 1830)
Phillip K. (b. 1832) Lee says Phillip's birth place was Hall County.]

Lavone Major - 05/06/00
The name of your first known ancestor: John Barton

Since I posted on this site about 2 months ago seeking info. on my greatgrandfather, James Garvin Barton (b.July 8,1847 in SC) I was able to find the names of his parents on his Confederate pension application. His parents were Shapley Barton and Elizabet Montgomery of Greenville Co.SC. Having these names has led me to the extensive research done on the Greenville,SC Bartons by a number of people and also in the Barton book. Some researchers have nothing on James Garvin Barton beyond his name and an approximate birth year. And some others (I believe they may have obtained their info. from the Barton Book) along with the Barton Book have James Garvin Barton, son of Shapley Barton and Elizabeth Montgomery married to a woman named Fannie with children Horace Stafford, and Lyda. This is incorrect. James Garvin Barton, son of Shapley Barton and Elizabeth Montgomery of Greenville SC married Angeline Hawkins Blackston (a widow) on April 25, 1882 in Forsyth Co.GA. They had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Barton, born o June 25, 1889 in Gordon Co.GA. Mary Elizabeth Barton (Smith) was my maternal grandmother. I would like to hear from any Barton researchers who would care to comment on this. Please e-mail me at
