I am looking for my GGG grandfathers military activities, without success. Col. Wilson Barton b.Mar 17,1796 in Greenville, S.C. Son of David & Nancy (Barret) Barton, married to Mildah McKinney. Moved to Texas in 1854 with his sons. Wilson probably was not regular army. I'd like to know how he became a Colonel. What battles? What wars? 1812? Any suggestions, knowledge, rumors, stories or wild guesses may help. Thanks

The name of your first known ancestor: John Barton
Since I posted on this site about 2 months ago seeking info. on my greatgrandfather, James Garvin Barton (b.July 8,1847 in SC) I was able to find the names of his parents on his Confederate pension application. His parents were Shapley Barton and Elizabet Montgomery of Greenville Co.SC. Having these names has led me to the extensive research done on the Greenville,SC Bartons by a number of people and also in the Barton book. Some researchers have nothing on James Garvin Barton beyond his name and an approximate birth year. And some others (I believe they may have obtained their info. from the Barton Book) along with the Barton Book have James Garvin Barton, son of Shapley Barton and Elizabeth Montgomery married to a woman named Fannie with children Horace Stafford, and Lyda. This is incorrect. James Garvin Barton, son of Shapley Barton and Elizabeth Montgomery of Greenville SC married Angeline Hawkins Blackston (a widow) on April 25, 1882 in Forsyth Co.GA. They had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Barton, born o June 25, 1889 in Gordon Co.GA. Mary Elizabeth Barton (Smith) was my maternal grandmother. I would like to hear from any Barton researchers who would care to comment on this. Please e-mail me at themajors@mindspring.com.

The name of your first known ancestor: John Barton
Where was your ancestor born?: Surry Co., England
I'm a descendent of the "Southern" S.C. Bartons thru John Milton Barton and Sophia Keitle. I'm also descended from James Bracken b.1765 S.C. married Elizabeth Barton b.abt.1770 S.C. They moved to Transylvania Co., N.C.and both are buried in an old family cemetery in Trans.Co. I'm trying to locate parents of Elizabeth Barton. I've been unable to tie her to my known S.C. Bartons. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also, I'm trying to find the correct parents for Mary"Polly" Barton b.1817 S.C. married Jonas Simpson b. 1806 S.C. I think she is the daughter of Thomas Barton and Nancy Easley, but others feel she is the daughter of John Milton Barton and Sophia Keitle. They both had daughters named Mary, nicknamed "Polly". I'd love some input.
