Years ago I secured a copy of their marriage record from the records in Jefferson County. The parents of Isaac were John and Mary Barton. From Debby Black:

David,

Note the 1850 census of Jefferson County, AL:

#36 Barton,

10-14-1847, Deed Records of Leon County, Vol. A., page 203-204:

Thomas Barton (wife Susanah) of Jefferson Co., Alabama, gave power of attorney to William Childress of Leon Co., to handle the estate of Thomas York.

*      *      *

Elizabeth was the wife of William Childress. The William Childress family resided in Jefferson Co., AL before 1830.  In fact, a William Childress  and Emanuel York both purchased land  9-3-1821 (probably in Jefferson Co.) according to the Tuscaloosa land records.  They were both listed as residents of Jefferson County at this time. The Childress family moved to Choctaw Co., MS ca 1832 and Leon Co., TX in the fall of 1841.

According to Annals of Northwest Alabama, Vol. I, p. 21,  p. 119, Emanuel York and John Barton were the first settlers who "pitched their tents and raised their crops of corn" where Tuscaloosa now stands.  Mr. George Powell, a Blount Co. historian, stated that in 1815 several citizens left the Upper Districts of South Carolina and migrated to Tennessee, then early in 1817[?] arrived in Blount Co., AL.

John Barton, a blacksmith, and Emanuel York were the first settlers of Tuscaloosa.

*    *    *

And from Pioneers of Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama Prior to 1830 Thomas, Emanuel and Johnathan York along with John Barton were listed as charter members of the First Methodist Church which was established in Tuscaloosa in June, 1818.

Whether the Emanuel York is the same one as the one who later resided in Jefferson Co. or not needs to be addressed.  This lead might tie John Barton (mentioned above) to Thomas Barton of Jefferson Co.

Elizabeth - 04/06/00

The name of your first known ancestor: Thomas Barton
Where was your ancestor born?: SC

I've recently broken through a great brick wall and determined that Thomas Barton and wife Elizabeth of Jefferson Co AL and Noxubee Co MS are my g-g-grandparents. Thomas was born abt. 1797 in SC. He had sons named Benjamin, William, and Bailey. Based on these names and dates, I think he may be the Thomas Barton who was a son of Benjamin Barton and Dorcas Anderson. Thomas married Elizabeth Ransom in AL in 1832. His first wife may have been Sally Boyd (WFT V.13,#168). I'd love to hear from anyone who knows this family and can comment on (or maybe even verify!) my conclusions. Thanks, Elizabeth

In an email, Elizabeth also mentioned Thomas Barton and wife Elizabeth moved to Noxubee Co. MS.

You mentioned that you keep track of the Nations because they appear wherever the Bartons appear. Another Reid researcher sent me this:

22 June, 1833, Jefferson County, AL; Isaac Barton and wife Nancy sell to William Reid, 80 acres.... Witnessed by Jonathan Liverman and Isaac Nations.

Do you have anything on these Isaacs?

The 1830 Alabama census for Jefferson County, AL, shows:

Ashcroft Barton p. 183
Avry Barton p. 183
Benjamin Barton p. 183
John Barton p. 183
Isaac Barton p. 183
Thomas Barton p. 184

My William Reid is also on p. 183 as is James Reid.

Any idea who these Bartons are?  In 1840 only James, John, Thomas, Thomas, Jr., and Thomas, Sr., remain. Any idea where they went?

Thanks.
