The Joseph Barton clan disappeared after the 1840 census.
If Joseph was the son of Rebecca Barton of Hall Co., GA and IF she was the same Rebecca as the one listed in 1820 Pendleton Dist., SC, Joseph would have been born in about 1800.

If Joseph and Matilda were still living by 1850, they probably had several more children. With at least three sons and two daughters, surely there are descendants researching this family. Where are they?
In 1850, there were a number of Joseph Bartons recorded in the census records, but none in Hall Co.
There was an Ezekiel Dunagain (b. 5-1771) who md:
(1) 1791/2 Lydia Ann Brown
(2) 1825 Margaret "Peggy" Wallace
The death date of Ezekiel is not known, but Margaret may have been the neighbor of Joseph in the 1840 census. According to Gone To Georgia, by William Stewart, these Dunagan's were thought to belong to families in Greenville and Pendleton Districts of South Carolina and earlier from Orange Co., North Carolina.
An Ellis Buffington (b. 1800/d. 1869) md. Margaret Ella "Peggy" Bell. Ellis was the son of Oborn Buffington.
