NORTHERN
BARTONS
If you're a Northern Barton researcher who landed on this Southern Barton site by mistake, then you're very welcome to explore the site to your heart's content. If you want to jump on the tracks and hitch a ride up north, I hope to provide a few northern Barton links on this page.
If you have (or know of) a northern Barton genealogy web site you'd like
listed on this page, send me an email with the location included.
Any northern Barton researcher is welcome to send a query by email. I'm including this section for northern Bartons because, after all, many of us are probably cousins. We just haven't gotten connected over in England/Ireland/Scotland yet.

I don't have a connection to the Barton family except thru a friendship several
years ago here in Keokuk, Iowa with a Barton Family that were neighbors of
my sisters. I am trying to locate the children of Clarence and Holly Barton
Peggy
Patsy
Danny
Janice
The girls are more than likely married now, I know that Patsy was married to an A.J.Schneider and last I heard Clarence and Holly had moved to Southern Ill. I believe Carbondale and last I knew was Holly had passed away and then Clarence died later. I was best friends with the youngest Janice always wondered whatever happened to them all. I believe they may have came from Tennessee before moveing to Keokuk, Ia. They moved away I think in the middle 1960's if anyone knows of the whereabouts of all or any of them would sure love to hear from them.

Barton D. Hawley was b. c.1763 in Prince George's Co., Maryland, directly across the Potomac River from Stafford Co., Va. He was the son of John Hawley/Halley and his wife Mary Ann Downs. John Hawley/Halley was b. in 1739 and I have his lineage back to 1712 in Maryland - he was the son of John Hawley b. 1686 and his wife Hester Burch whom he married in Accokeek, Md. in 1712. Also directly across from Stafford Co., Va.. For Barton D. Hawley/Halley to have been given the name of Barton I feel there must be some connection with the Barton family in Stafford Co., Va. Any information would be most appreciated and I will be happy to share. Barton D. Hawley m. Catherine Heath in Loudoun Co., Va. and after her death he m. Hannah James. They migrated to Guernsey Co., Ohio.

Subject: Re: Barton's in N. Michigan
I am looking for a Barton family that raised my grandfather, George Raymond Darrah, b 1894 at Jewell Lake (Mud Lake) MI until he was fifteen. Mud Lake in 1912 was named "Barton City" after an early settler Frank Barton (on the Barton City homepage), maybe part of the same family. Trying all angles to find out who my great grandfather and mother were (his name was likely George H. Darrah).
The Barton family lived on an island on Jewell Lake which also sported a hotel. I'm told, according to a local researcher up there, that they may have moved to Alberta Canada in the early 1900's. I know that my grandfather, George Raymond Darrah, had a foster brother named Herb Barton. My grandmother apparently died during childbirth, and George H., who was a lumberman, couldn't take care of the child. He knew the Barton's we think (lumber people), and fostered his son there in Barton City (what was then Mud/Jewell Lake or possibly in nearby Lincoln). He visited and sent money until George was nine (about 1905) and was never heard from again. It was assumed he died in a lumber accident. George stayed with the Barton's until he was fifteen, and then had a fallout with them and left for Minnesota.
I was told by a Barton City resident that "The Barton Girls" were known to have to walk across the ice to get home in winter, no dates in that reference. Also, I was informed that the Barton's battled the government to stay on the island in Jewell Lake, but eventually lost, having to vacate.
That is all I have on the Barton's. I've found a George Darrah in Muskegon Michigan (1889/90) that was a laborer for "Muskegon Shingle & Lumber". There was a company registered in Muskegon County called "C.B. Seaman, Jones and Barton" that was into logging at that time. I'm investigating those leads. I'm going to Michigan this summer to do some research.
