COFFEE COUNTY, TENNESSEE

The following families are descendants of Benjamin Barton [son of David and Ruth (Oldham) Barton] who md. *Lucy Wellborn 10-10-1779:

Jerusha Barton (b. 9-1795; GA/d. 9-1856; Manchester, Coffee Co., TN)  Md. (1) James R. Yell, Sr.  Their children:

  3. Benjamin Barton (b. 1825; TN) md. Annie Belle Waite
  4. Lucy Wilburn (b. 1827; TN)  [Wonder if this could have been Welborn instead?]
  5. Cynthia (b. ?; TN)
  6. Joshua Butch (b. 1832; TN)
  7. James R. Yell, Jr. (b. ?; TN)
  8. Barton Dekalb (b. 1835; TN
  9. Ruthie Starnes (1838; TN)  md. Warren Starnes Waite

Jerusha Barton md. (2) George Waite, Sr. and had children:

  1. James (b. 1844; TN)
  2. Archibald (1848; TN)

In a letter dated 2-13-1989, Jimmie Alford states, "My 3rd great grandmother was Jerusha (Barton) Yell..." In this same letter Jimmie states that Jerusha had a brother, Abner Barton.  Jimmie sent the above list of children for Jerusha.  After receiving her letter, I looked Jerusha and Abner up in the census indexes.

Abner Barton was listed in the 1830 Bedford Co., TN census living near James Yell.  He was in the 1840/50/60 Coffee Co., TN census reports.  I don't have any details on any of these reports except the 1860 census.

According to a letter from Ruth Coleman dated 9-1988, David and Ruth (Oldham) Barton's son, Benjamin, moved from Franklin Co., GA to Bedford Co., TN by 1808 and finally on to Lauderdale Co., AL before 1820. Benjamin had a son named William Starnes Barton.  

William Starnes Barton (d. 1830/31; Lauderdale Co., AL) md. Elizabeth Jenkins (d. 1862; Monroe Co., MS)

Did William Starnes have children:  Eliza, Caroline, Louise, William B. and Starnes W.?

Benjamin Barton's dau., Ruth md. Thomas Jenkins, Sr. and had 9 children.

Benjamin's dau., Frances, md. Thomas Jenkins, Jr.
