Do you know the MS county in which James Madison resided?  To which county in LA did he move?

There was a James M. Barton listed in the 1840 census of Itawamba Co., MS on page 30. A John H. Barton was listed on page 28. John was born about 1800, but it is unlikely he was the father of your James because he had a younger son, James, listed in the 1850 census. Maybe John was an uncle or older brother (20 years older) than your James. Just a thought.

Debby,

Unfortunately, It's merely a family story that he came from MS. I'm trying to prove/disprove it. But all indications are that he did indeed come from MS. I mean everyone in my family says so. Unfortunately, I don't know what county he came from in MS. However, I do have an idea that he moved to Calcasieu, Rapides Parish, LA (His 1st born was born in LA in 1852). But his 2nd born was born in MS in 1854.  His 3rd born was born in LA in 1856...
