Notes for DANIEL BARTON:
Our departed brother Daniel Barton
Was the son of Mr. Stephen & Mrs. Betsie Barton & was born in Baltimore
Co., Maryland on June 2nd 1838. His earlier years were spent in that part
of the country. At the age of about 22 years, he came to Montgomery Co. N.C.
being employed in work connected with mines that had been opened there. On
the fifth of March he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Jane Saunders.
Their union was blessed with 12 children, six boys & six girls. Two of
them died many years ago, but 10 children with 9 grand-[children] survive
their father, along with his faithful wife whom the Lord has mercifully
preserved, enabling her to care for her husband to the end.
During the last years of [the] Civil War Br. Barton enlisted into the Confederate army & was engulfed in the Wilderness battles, which were among the severest in the whole war.
After the close [of] the war, he moved with his family to Baltimore, Maryland which was near to the home of his childhood & where some of his family still abide.
In July 1879 our departed brother came to Salem as a miller in the employ of [I can't make this out, but we know he worked for Fries Mill]. He continued in the service of this firm for 25 years.
Br. Barton had been baptized in his infancy, but had never connected himself as communicant with any Church. This he did in 1880 when on March 21st he was confirmed in the Moravian Home Church of Salem & attended the Holy Communion for the first time on March 25th of that year.
For a long time he was employed in the church services. He ? the building become a very 2nd home to him & he was a familiar figure with all who are accustomed to attend our service. He was very faithful in his calling & only gave it up when his increasing infirmities compelled him to do so.
Nearly ten years ago, he was served with a stroke of paralysis while in the engine room of the manufactory in which he was employed. He never recovered from the shock & gradually his condition became worse, and it appeared that both body & mind were shattered with the growing fever of his disease. During this painful period he was very faithfully saved ? in his own home. He enjoyed being prayed with & often espoused in his more lucid moments his grand desire to experience the mercy of God.
For the last ten days he has been rapidly failing & on Tuesday evening at 9:45 o'clock, March 7th 1905 he peacefully enlisted into his rest. His age was 66 years, 6 months & 5 days.
"God of plenty, God of Grace
Hear from Heaven, thy dwelling place
Hear in mercy & forgive
Bid thy child ? above
Bless me & I shall [be] as blest
? I shall have rest
Fix my heart, my hopes above
Save me Lord, for Thou art love."

Memoir of Mary Jane Barton
Our departed sister Mary Jane Barton was the daughter of Pleasant and Cassie Saunders. She was born in Montgomery County North Carolina on the 21st January 1841.
When 21 years of age she was married to the late Daniel Barton and soon thereafter moved with her husband to Baltimore, Maryland where they resided for about 18 years. In 1881 they moved with their family to Salem where they have since continued to make their home.
In caring for her home and her large family of ten children our sister, she gave herself such whole-hearted devotion. She knew what it was to feel heavy home cares resting on her: to have always an abundance of work to call for her time and strength. She was a (?) hard-working mother and did her best in caring for her home and loved ones. She led a busy life and to be busy was so thoroughly a part of her nature that in her declining days and enfeebled condition her children found difficulty in keeping her from her accustomed tasks.
On November 14, 1886, at the close of the (?) our sister made profession of her faith in Jesus Christ and was received into the membership of the Home Moravian Church, of which she was a faithful member and a regular attendant on its services whenever home cares and the health of her family permitted.
A little less than a year ago her husband died after a long and painful illness during which our sister nursed him with great faithfulness. After her husband's death, our sister continued her residence in the old house with two of her children Rachel and Esau, the daughter being constant in her thought & care for her mother and doing what could be done for her comfort. While it was known that the mother's health was very bad, yet no one thought the end quite so near. On last Sunday she was busy with her duties and did not complain more than usual about her condition. It was not until Monday morning that the family became aware of her serious condition. The physician was summoned but the pilgrimage was almost over and soon after the noon hour, with her daughter's arms around her, she breathed her last.
Her age was 66 yrs, 1 mo. and 24 days. She is survived by the six sons, Artemus J., Pleasant F., Esau and Daniel who reside in Winston-Salem, Edward now living in Nashville, Tenn., Zacheus who resides in California and four daughters, Mrs. L.M. Foley of ?chester, Maryland., Mrs. C. R. Bryan(t) of Elkin and Misses Grace and Rachel Barton of Salem.

Notes for ARTEMUS A. BARTON:
MEMOIR OF BRO. ARTEMUS BARTON
Our departed brother, Artemus Barton, was born in the city of Baltimore on August 13, 1862. He was the son of Bro. Daniel and Sr. Mary Jane Barton, whose maiden name was Saunders.
In his older boyhood, he came with his parents and their family to live in this community and continued to make it his home during the remainder of his life.
At the age of twenty, (April 2, 1882), our Brother made profession of his faith in Christ as his Saviour and united with the Home Moravian Church and was for many years a regular attendant upon its services and a faithful and interested member of the Elm Street Sunday School.
On December 24, 1889, he was united in marriage with Miss Catherine Augusta Hopkins, a union which, under the Providence of God, was to continue happily for almost thirty-six years.
By profession, our Brother was an engineer and served with various industrial organizations of our city. He was a man of good habits, conscientious and faithful in his service and one who sought to discharge all of his business and financial obligations to the extent of his ability.
Of quiet and retiring disposition, he loved the seclusion of his home and the companionship of his wife and his books. He was a great reader and possessed an unusually retentive memory.
For several years his health had been giving way, and some months ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis; but more recently there had been improvement in his condition and his loved ones and friends hoped that he might soon regain his accustomed vigor. But last Wednesday he suffered a second stroke, and on Saturday morning about one o'clock (October 17, 1925) peacefully fell asleep. His age ws 63 years, 2 months and 4 days.
He is survived by his faithful and devoted wife; by four brothers, Pleasant F., Esau, Daniel, and Edward Barton; and by two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Bryant and Miss Grace Barton.

Notes for GRACE BARTON:
MEMOIR OF MRS. GRACE BARTON CONRAD
"It is not death to die,
To leave this weary road,
And midst the brotherhood on high
To be at home with God.
It is not death, to fling
Aside this mortal dust
And rise on strong, exulting wing
To live among the just.
Jesus, Thou Prince of Life
Thy chosen cannot die,
Like Thee, they conquer in the strife,
To reign with Thee on high."
When we come to the funeral hour of one who has lived long and in the weakness of age and health has become inactive, our hearts cannot but feel gratitude that God has called her from infirmity to the higher service of Heaven. For the Christian, death is not an ending, but a new beginning of a life that is richer, fuller, and more blessed than is ever possible here. Thus we contemplate today a victory. Although we sorrow at our earthly parting, we rejoice in the thought of Heaven's reunion when we shall meet again in the presence of the Master.
Our departed sister Mrs. Grace Barton Conrad, was the daughter of Daniel and Mary Jane m.n. Saunders Barton and was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 5, 1873. At an early age, her family moved to Salem, where our sister was to spend most of the remaining days of her life.
Here she received her education, and here she was brought under the influence of the Home Moravian Church, uniting with its membership by confirmation on May 20, 1888.
She lived a simple life, but one that was marked by service and by devotion to her friends and her family. She was particularly gifted in caring for the sick, and gave service for many years in the Infirmary at Salem College. Following her retirement from this employ, she continued to care for those who were ill in their homes. Her service was always marked by loyalty and a cheerful disposition which endeared her to those who were ill.
Noteworthy in her life was her great love and devotion to her church. She was a regular attendant at its Sunday services and its prayer meetings. She had found great joy in her Sunday School class, having been a member of the Mary A. Fogle Bible Class and later the Bessie Whittington Pfohl Bible Class. She was likewise a devoted member of the Women of the Church and enjoyed the circle meetings, and gave active service in the Lend-A-Hand Circle. Living throughout most of her life within walking distance of her church, it exerted a central influence in all of her activities. She found strength, encouragement, and the constant renewal of her faith in its organizational life. She loved her Savior and demonstrated, by her quiet daily walk, the example of a godly Christian life.
In August of 1931, she was united in marriage with Julius F. Conrad. Theirs was a happy home, but she was saddened five years later by his passing on March 31, 1936.
Our sister then moved her residence to the Belo House where she lived for a number of years until her health failed. She lived for a brief time at the Salem Home until the condition of her health required daily nursing care at a rest home. She had been in very poor health since December, 1955, and was critically ill for three weeks prior to her passing on the afternoon of Friday, February 9, 1956. Although her survivors include no closer relatives than her nieces and nephews, she will be remembered by her many friends and her family for the Christian quality of her life which allowed her to meet trial and illness with a strong and resolute faith.
The memory of her Christian witness can lead us again and again to rejoice with the Apostle Paul and say: "Thanks be unto God who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Her age was 82 years, eight months, and four days.

Notes for DANIEL A. BARTON:
Memoir of Bro. Daniel Barton
Our departed Brother Daniel Barton was a resident of Winston-Salem since 1880. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 3, 1876 and came with his parents Daniel and Mary Jane Barton, m.n. Saunders when they moved to this city four years later, establishing their home on South Trade near Bank Street. It was a large family, six sons and four daughters, Daniel being the fourth son.
He was educated in the public schools of the community, attended the Elm Street Moravian Sunday School almost from the beginning and in his later teens served an apprenticeship at the plasterers trade at which he continued during his entire active life. He acquired great skill in his chosen work and found steady demand for his service.
On July 13, 1899 he was untied in marriage with Miss Minnie May Livengood of this city, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Arthur D. Thaeler, assistant pastor of the Home Church and later pastor of Calvary Church.
To their union were born five daughters and one son all of whom survive both the father and mother.
In his early manhood our Brother united with Calvary Moravian Church and for many years was a regular attendant upon its services and Sunday School. He was also a member of Salem Lodge 289 A. F. and A. M.
After some years of failing health he answered the final summons of God and pass[ed] to his eternal reward on Monday morning July 27, 1942, age 65 years, 9 months and 24 days.
He is survived by his daughters Miss Claude L. Barton and Mrs. Alice Barton Baynes of Winston-Salem, Mrs. T. D. Robbins of Charlotte, Misses Ruby and Margaret Barton of Washington and his son Robert Barton also of Winston-Salem. Of his father's family tree remain, Mrs. Grace Conrad of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Cassie Bryant of Ronda, N. C. and Edward Barton of Nashville, Tenn.

Notes for MINNIE MAY LIVENGOOD:
Our departed Sister MINNIE MAY BARTON, m.n., Livengood, was born Sept. 4, 1879, in Winston-Salem. Her home was in East Salem, and here she was reared, and attended the services of the Lord's House in the East Salem Chapel. It was in East Salem that she was dedicated to the Lord in Baptism and united with the church upon profession of faith, under the pastorate of Bro. J. F. McCuiston.
On July 13, 1899, our sister was united in marriage with Bro. Daniel Barton. The couple lived for a short time in the house on the corner of Washington Avenue and Popular Street, but soon came to the present home where for many years she has been the faithful mother of this household.
She was a devoted mother to her family and the many duties of the home kept her busily engaged from morning to night. She did not often have opportunity to come to church in late years, but it was evident that the Lord meant a great deal to her in her every-day life. She was always thankful for prayer in the home.
Two years ago, her health began seriously to fail, and about one year ago, after everything possible had been done for her here at home, it was necessary to take her to the State Hospital for treatment. In the last months her mental condition improved greatly but her physical condition grew steadily worse. She passed away January 3, 1924, at 5 p.m., bring[ing] her age to 44 years, 3 months and 29 days.
She leaves her husband, Daniel Barton and her children to mourn her departure: for she did so much for all of them - her life was given in their service. The children in the order of their ages are Miss Claude, Miss Mildred, Robert, Alice, Ruby, Margaret and Hugh. To husband and children may God grant His special comfort and strength and grant them all as a family to live near to Him, their mother's God Who will give them grace sufficient for each day's needs.

She married JULIAN ARCASTUS STITH December 12, 1907 in Forsyth Co., North Carolina25, son of JULIUS STITH and OCTAVIA WILSON. He was born March 6, 1880 in North Carolina26, and died June 25, 1953 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth Co., North Carolina26.
Notes for RACHEL ELLEN BARTON:
Rachel's Memoir from the Moravian Archives, Winston-Salem, NC
What is a mother's love?
A noble, pure and tender flame,
Enkindled from above,
To bless a heart of earthly mold;
The warmest lvoe that ne'er grows cold-
This is a mother's love
No words suggest themselves with equal appropriateness for the opening of these this tender memoir to a devoted mother, as these beautiful lines of Montgomery. Our sister was a loving and faithful wife and a staunch and true friend, but excepting these she was a devoted and consecrated mother.
Sister Rachel Ellen Stith was born in Winston-Salem on December 5th., 1882, youngest of the children of the late Bro. Daniel Barton and his wife Mary m.n. Saunders.
She was educated in the schools of the city and graduated from the Salem Academy and College, including music in her course of study, and developing a voice of rich quality and promise.
On April 7th., 1895, she made public profession of her faith in Christ as her Saviour and was baptized in the Home Moravian Church, continuing faithful in her membership interest there until her death.
After graduation she spent some years in the service of the home, assisting her aging mother with the many household duties, and finding time, too, for impor(?) choir and Sunday School service in connection with Christ Moravian Church.
On December 12th., 1907, she was happily married to Mr. Julian A. Stith of this city and for the first few years of their married life they resided in North Winston. But some five years ago they removed to their attractive and newly-built home on South Church Street. Into their home, God was pleased to give four children, two sons and two daughters, and it was primarily on their account that the change of residence was made, for it was the mother's wish to bring them up in the shadow of her church and to have them profit by the careful instruction in the Sunday School which had brought such blessing into her life.
The course of the home life of our sister was much like that of the average home. There were dark, shadow days when there was severe and protracted illness; there were bright and happy days when all were well. But withal it was a happy home. She rejoiced in the kindness of her husband and the love of her children. She had already proved herself to be a mother of the old school who sought to give her children Christian training and lessons of obedience and parental direction were beginning to tell on the character of her children. And in this she was sympathetically aided by her husband.
Last week, the children became ill with the widely prevailing epidemic of influenza and a few days later the mother herself was stricken down. She was not in condition to withstand the ravages of disease and in a short while it was known that her condition was serious. Loved ones and friends rendered every ? possible, physicians and nurses die their best. Both in private and in public service her case was brought before the Lord, that if consistent with His will, her life might be spared. In His infinite wisdom and never-failing love He willed otherwise and on the morning of December 8th., 1918, about 4:30 o'clock, she feel asleep in Jesus. Her age was 36 years and 3 days.
She is survived by her sorely bereaved husband and four children.

Surname Given Name Company Postoffice Regt Batt Rank Enrollment
Stith Julian A. C Winston, N. C. First Regiment Private ---
"Julian, the second son of Julius B. and Octavia Wilson Stith, was born in 1883. He moved with his father, mother, brothers Tim and Frank, and sister Orilla to Winston-Salem in 1896. In that same year their mother died.
At the age of 17, he joined the army to fight in the Spanish-American War although he was under-age. He became a captain and remained in the army throughout the war.
Subsequently their father returned to Eastern Carolina, but the four children remained in Winston-Salem.
Julian owned a number of businesses at one time or another. Among them was the Smokers Den on the Court House Square where the influential businessmen of the village gathered from smokes, soft drinks, and conversation. Other businesses that he either owned or managed were a resort hotel with horseback riding trails, a wrestling arena in Greensboro, a shoe store, and a drug store. In some of these businesses, his brother Tim was his partner.
Julian owned one of the first touring cars in Winston-Salem. He drove his family on the dusty roads to Eastern Carolina to visit relatives, wearing the fashionable dusters and caps with goggles:
Julian was twice married. By his first wife, Rachel Barton, there were four children who gave them five grandchildren.
(Their first-born son was Wilbur, born in 1909 when they were living on Church Street in Old Salem, just below the College.)
Wilbur made a career of the Navy and during World War II was a Chief Petty Officer in naval hospitals, serving in an administrative capacity. He saw service all over the world.
He was in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese bombing on December 17, 1944 (sic). He was one of the fortunate ones who escaped uninjured. After the war, he brought home many souvenirs of the war including the fabric for the tail of a Japanese plane with the rising sun on it.
Had Wilbur lived, he could have supplied us with much Stith data. He was quite interested in his heritage. In his travels, the first thing he did when he arrived in a town was to look in the telephone directory and call any Stiths he found there. He probably met with a wide variety of reactions, but that never deterred him. Unfortunately all the information he accumulated has been lost.
After his retirement, Wilbur lived in Florida for a few years. While there, he was instrumental in starting a Moravian Church in Boca Raton.
Octavia, the oldest daughter had several careers. At one time she was manager of a downtown restaurant. Later, she became a laboratory technician. And, of course she was a super mom. She and her husband, Sam Minor, had one son, Richard, who became a teacher as is his wife. The have two beautiful daughters, Heather and April.
Jeanette, the second daughter of Julian and Rachel, was active in her husband's construction business. Later, she worked with her cousin Carl Barnes as a secretary in his interior-design and antique business. She too, had one son and one grandchild.
Alvin, the second son, spent most of his life in sales and in highway construction. He lost his life in an accident when he was managing a project.
Julian Stith's second wife was Nancy Barnes. Before her marriage she had a successful career as a secretary at R. J. Reynolds. As a wife and mother she was equally successful. She never showed an preference between her husband's children by his first wife and her own children. They were so young when their natural mother died, that to them, Nancy was their mother. Everyone in the Stith family loved her dearly.
She and Julian had two sons, Julian and Harold. They were both in the Air Force during World War II. They married lovely girls and gave their parents six lovely grandchildren. Julian had a successful service station and garage."

Notes for ROBERT ERVIN BARTON:
THE MEMOIR OF BRO. ROBERT ERVIN BARTON
As we gather today to mark the translation of our brother to the Church Triumphant, we are still stunned at his sudden departure from our midst. Yet, believing in a Divine Wisdom and a loving, purposeful plan for every life committed to our Master, we yield him to the Lord in Whom he has his being. Deeper thoughts cause us to rejoice in the fact that he was spared suffering and lengthy inactivity.
As we come today to remember the qualities of Christian character which marked his life, we meet in the assurance that our brother has now entered into the Life Triumphant in the more immediate presence of his Lord. May the memory of his life among us remind us of the deeper joys which await all believers in the Heavenly Kingdom.
Our departed brother, Robert Ervin Barton, was the son of Daniel and Minnie May Livengood Barton and was born in Winston-Salem on August 2, 1906. The son of a Christian home, he was presented to the Lord in baptism by his parents in infancy at the Home Moravian Church. He confirmed his baptismal covenant on Palm Sunday, April 13, 1919, in his thirteenth year. His confirmation text was the assuring promise from the 41st chapter of Isaiah, verse 10:
"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed;
for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will
help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of
my righteousness."
He received his early education at the Salem Boys' School and was graduated from the public schools of the community.
On December 24, 1927, he was united in marriage with Miss Eva (sic) Elizabeth Allen. Their union was blessed of God by the birth of two daughters. Carefully he and his wife brought their children into active association with the Home Moravian Church and its program of Christian nurture.
Upon graduation from high school, our brother had begun an association with the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company that was to continue through the remaining 44 years of his life. His faithful service had been rewarded as he had worked his way through the ranks to become office manager in the sales department. A man of outgoing friendliness and cheerfulness, he was beloved by his associates in business.
Prior to his marriage, he became a member of the Knights of Pythias and through the years had been active in all phases of Lodge work, holding numerous offices, and serving as secretary-treasurer of the Winston-Salem group for some 20 years.
As one who had loved the Home Moravian Church since earliest childhood, our brother had been active in the Men's Bible Class, served for a number of years on the Board of Ushers, and joined his family in worship services. The great love of his life had been the Band work of the Moravian Church. He was a member of the Salem Band and enjoyed the concert schedule each summer. He played with the Church Band to announce the festival occasions of the congregation. His singular devotion to the Easter Band is indicated by the fact that he had not missed playing in a single Sunrise Service since he was nine years of age until last Easter, when he was ill.
He had also been a loyal member of the American Legion Band for many years and had traveled to distant cities to participate in their conventions.
Always a man of vigor and of faithfulness to the responsibilities of his work and his family, his illness came suddenly and unexpectedly at the beginning of a new day of work. His Lord's call to join the ranks of the Church Triumphant came at 9:00 o'clock on Thursday, December 7, 1967, shortly after his arrival at the hospital. Though his family and friends sorrow at the suddenness of his departure from us, we affirm our faith in the Master whom he served, the One in whom we live and move and have our being, who has adjudged his earthly labors to be complete.
Our brother's age was 61 years, 4 months, and 5 days.
He is survived by his devoted wife with whom he had shared almost 40 years of happy marriage; by two daughters, Miss Judith Barton of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Robert Harris of Clinton, N.C.; by two grandchildren; by five sisters, Mrs. Claude Gilbert, Mrs. Alice Baynes, and Miss Margaret Barton of Winston-Salem, by Mrs. Mildred Robbins of Charlotte and Mrs. Ruby Potter of Alexandria, Virginia; and by a host of friends.
