ANDREW JACKSON BARTON, SR. FAMILY

Date: 10-2002
From: Tony

ANDREW JACKSON2 BARTON, SR. (JOHN?1) was born 1810 in Jackson County, Georgia, and died in Tift County, Georgia. He married BETTIE UNKNOWN. She was born Abt. 1814.

Unfortunately, I do not have smoking gun documentary proof linking Andrew Jackson Barton, Sr. from Irwin Co., GA as the son of John Barton [John who md. Patsy Hardin]. However, I have...a Confederate States Army discharge document I received from the National Archives, which shows that A.J. Barton was born in Jackson County, Georgia, and that he was 53 years old as of March 1864. This puts his birth year around 1810-11. This coupled with the handed down information my mother told me that Andrew Jackson Barton's father was named John, made me draw that conclusion (keeping in mind at the time my mother told me, that she knew nothing of the details, and neither did I). My logical conclusion/theory, is that the John Barton that was on the Tax Digests of Jackson County, Georgia in 1809, was if fact the father of A. J. Barton, Sr. I understand this wouldn't hold up in a genealogy court, because I don't have documentary evidence, but the lack of information of other "official" Bartons in Jackson County at that time makes it appear that from a "reasonable belief" standpoint, it is true. This is where my further search will point. I know nothing of John Barton besides that, except the handed down belief (from my mother) that his heritage was probably from Ireland.

The family story as told by my mother...is that her grandfather Benjamin F. Barton (from Fitzgerald, Ga), after serving in the Spanish American War, had to legally change his last name to Barden in order to draw pension. The Army had mispelled his name when the Mustering In/Out Records were made. That was the story she told me..to which I couldn't prove, until....

I saw the microfilmed records (as located in the Georgia Archives) for him (shown above) which clearly misspell his name two different spellings Bardon and Barden. Benjamin's signature appears as Barton. They even spelled Irwin county as Irvin county. My guess is that as he was standing there before the recruiting officer or mustering in officer, he was told to state his name, to which the officer filling out the muster roll, wrote what he thought he heard. The spoken word Barton sounded like "Bardon" or "Barden". Record keeping accuracy was apparently not as important at the time for Volunteer units.

The 1910 Census clearly corroborates my mother's story, with his last name clearly spelled as Barton, not Bardon, nor Barden. The last name change probably occurred after the 1910 Census, when Benjamin or his wife Nellie applied for pension. At the turn of the century, Irwin county was broken up into several smaller counties. Ben Hill county was one of the new counties. Fitzgerald, Ga is the county seat for Ben Hill County.

My mother also said that one of her grandfathers had married a Cherokee Indian woman. That might explain the differences in skin complexion between Andrew Jackson Barton, Sr. and Andrew Jr. (from black hair, blue eyes, fair complexion to dk brown hair, brown eyes and dark complexion)...of course he could have been a farmer with a nice farmer's tan...
